First Snow
by Mary Louise Allen

Snow makes whiteness where it falls
The bushes look like popcorn balls
And places where I always play
Look like somewhere else today

Beautiful feathery flakes of snow
Over the woodland and field they go
Making a blanket so warm and deep
Over the flowers that lie asleep

Winter Arrival
by Marilyn Lott

It was a typical winter day
As I went for a little drive
I wanted to celebrate
For winter had arrived

I bundled up and took
My morning country trip
But as I got out of my car
I was careful I didn’t slip

For the fields were white
The road was slick with ice
But everything was lacy
It looked so fresh and nice

My world was transformed
To a winter wonderland
The ugly trees now lovely
Nature made its annual stand

I hope you see the beauty too
‘Course you’ll think about survival
When you have a white out scene
During nature’s winter arrival!

Jack Frost
by Helen Bayley Davis

Someone painted pictures on my
Windowpane last night
Willow trees with trailing boughs
And flowers, frosty white,

And lovely crystal butterflies;
But when the morning sun
Touched them with its golden beams,
They vanished one by one.

Card Games For Children: War

Card games for kids are a great indoor winter activity. My youngest daughter really enjoys playing cards with my husband or I, and War is one of her favorite games. :)

Use a standard 52-card pack.

Rank of Cards: Ace, King, Queen, Jack, 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2.

The deck is divided evenly, with each player receiving 26 cards, dealt one at a time, face down. Both players turns up a card at the same time and the player with the higher card takes both cards. They put them, face down, on the bottom of his stack.

If the cards are the same rank, it is War.

Both players place one card face down and one card face up. The player with the higher cards takes both piles (six cards). If the turned-up cards are again the same rank, each player places another card face down and turns another card face up. The player with the higher card takes all 10 cards, and so on.

The game ends when one player has won all the cards.

Have fun!
